Real-Time Chess Ratings Now Available on Chess.com
Chess.com has announced the launch of a new live ratings feature that provides players with up-to-the-minute FIDE rating updates and ranking movements. The platform tracks how tournament performances affect player ratings throughout the month, bridging the gap between the official monthly FIDE rating publications.
How Live Ratings Work
The traditional FIDE rating system publishes official updates only once per month, on the final day. This means that between publications, players officially maintain the same rating despite competing in tournaments and scoring significant results.
Chess.com’s live ratings system changes this dynamic by calculating estimated rating changes in real time. The platform demonstrates how recent performances will likely impact a player’s official rating when FIDE publishes its next update.
A concrete example illustrates the difference. During the TePe Sigeman Tournament, Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi achieved strong results with four draws and three wins against elite-level opposition. According to FIDE’s official website, his rating remained at 2751 until the next publication date. However, Chess.com’s live ratings system showed his performance earning him 10.4 additional rating points, projecting his advancement from 11th place to eighth in the world rankings.
Key Features of the New Ratings Page
The live ratings page at Chess.com/ratings includes several useful tools for tracking player progress and understanding rating movements.
Viewing Player Ratings and Results
Users can access any player’s live rating and ranking position, along with their recent game history. The platform displays tournament names, opponent details, game dates, and direct links to each game. By default, the system shows classical time control games, with options to filter by other time formats.
A green “Watch” button appears next to players who are currently engaged in rated games, allowing users to observe matches live on the Events page and learn more about the competition.
Switching Between Official and Live Ratings
A dropdown menu at the top left of the ratings page allows users to toggle between official FIDE ratings and the live estimates, giving players a clear view of both their current official standing and projected changes.
Filtering Options
The platform enables filtering by player category and country. Users can track ratings for Women, Juniors, and Girls categories independently, and select specific countries to monitor regional chess developments. Each category can be examined at the national level for more granular analysis.
Notable Limitations
The live ratings feature is available on Chess.com’s website but is not currently supported on the platform’s mobile applications. Users wishing to access the live ratings system should use a web browser.
Chess.com has invited the chess community to share feedback on the new ratings page, indicating the company remains open to refinements and additional features based on user experience.
