The Chinese grandmaster won convincingly with a score of 13.5-2.5, losing just two games across the entire hour-and-a-half encounter.

Hou’s dominance was particularly evident in the match’s fastest time control. She swept all six bullet games without dropping a single point, sealing her quarterfinal qualification decisively. For her victory, Hou earned $2,765.63, while Wagner received $234.38 based on win percentage.

The match began with the 5+1 rapid segment, where Hou established immediate control by winning four games and losing just one. After Wagner claimed the opening game with a last-second mate-in-one that forced a draw on the scoreboard, Hou responded with three consecutive victories. Wagner’s Brief Resistance

In the 3+1 segment, Wagner won the opening game by picking up a knight on c4 during a time scramble, briefly keeping the match competitive. However, this would prove to be Wagner’s last win. Hou then reeled off three consecutive victories, including one remarkable finish where she delivered checkmate with four queens on the board. Only one draw occurred in the entire match when Hou chose a threefold repetition rather than pressing her advantage.

The bullet portion was one-sided as Hou simply outplayed her opponent at the fastest time control. A critical moment came when Wagner hung her queen in the penultimate game, effectively ending any remaining competitive spirit. Avramidou Stages Upset Victory

In a stunning result, WGM Anastasia Avramidou pulled off an upset victory against fellow IM Polina Shuvalova, winning 7.5-6.5 in what proved to be the closest match of the evening. The Greek player’s victory was decided in the final bullet segment after trailing through the first two portions of the match.

Avramidou earned $2,303.57 for her upset win, while Shuvalova received $696.43. Despite being the tournament favorite heading into the match, Shuvalova could not hold her advantage once the games became a matter of seconds rather than minutes.

In the 3+1 games, the momentum remained with Shuvalova. The Russian player won the opening game and held her advantage entering the bullet phase, despite Avramidou evening the score temporarily. A critical moment came in game three when Avramidou discovered a winning knight sacrifice but only had four seconds on her clock to find the continuation. Playing on the increment with limited time, she missed the decisive move 36…Rd3!!, allowing Shuvalova to escape with a full point.

Avramidou’s Bullet Comeback

Unexpectedly, the first two bullet games ended in draws—an unusual result at such a fast time control. This setup proved crucial, as Avramidou then won the final two bullet games to clinch the match. Her first victory came in a tense rook endgame, but the deciding game was particularly dramatic.

After Avramidou had blundered a pawn on move 18, a Shuvalova victory appeared inevitable. However, Shuvalova’s own miscalculation on move 35 with Bxf2 completely collapsed her position, and Avramidou capitalized to secure the upset triumph and her quarterfinal berth.
