Key Facts

  • GM Javokhir Sindarov finished the first half of the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament with a remarkable 6/7 score, the best halfway result in modern Candidates history
  • Sindarov holds a 1.5-point lead over GM Fabiano Caruana heading into the second half of the tournament
  • No previous Candidates winner has ever recorded more than five total victories in a 14-round tournament
  • GM Wei Yi secured his first win of the tournament with a stylish attack against GM Andrey Esipenko in Round 7

Sindarov’s Dominant First Half

GM Javokhir Sindarov has established himself as the commanding figure in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament, concluding the first seven rounds with an unprecedented 6/7 score. This result marks the strongest halfway performance in the tournament’s history since the adoption of the eight-player double round-robin format.

Despite drawing his seventh-round game against GM Anish Giri, Sindarov maintained his exceptional trajectory. The draw prevented him from potentially matching or exceeding even higher heights, yet his 6/7 standing remains historically significant.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Sindarov’s achievement stands in stark contrast to previous tournament winners. Reviewing past Candidates tournaments dating back to 2013, no champion has scored more than five total victories across the full 14-round schedule. The best halfway score prior to this tournament was GM Ian Nepomniachtchi’s 5.5/7 in 2022.

If Sindarov draws all his remaining matches, he would finish with 9.5/14, matching Nepomniachtchi’s tournament record. More impressively, Sindarov has already accumulated five wins before the tournament’s midpoint, equaling the total victory count of previous champions across their entire competitions.

Giri Holds the Line

Anish Giri became only the second player to hold Sindarov to a draw in the tournament. The Dutch grandmaster executed a defensive masterpiece, sacrificing the exchange to reach an endgame he correctly assessed as defensible. Despite GM David Howell’s assessment that the position offered Sindarov “almost zero risk” and “maybe only two, three times out of 100” losses, Giri’s resilience prevented an eighth consecutive point.

Caruana Trails but Remains in Contention

GM Fabiano Caruana drew his seventh-round match against GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, maintaining his position as the closest challenger. Caruana sits 1.5 points behind Sindarov—a significant gap, but still within theoretical reach for the remainder of the tournament.

In his post-game analysis, Caruana acknowledged the difficulty of his position: “I’m the only one who’s within 1.5 points, so it’s not close, but the other players are even farther away.” He noted a direct encounter with Sindarov still awaits in the second half.

Wei Yi Breaks the Drought

In Round 7, only one decisive result emerged on the boards. GM Wei Yi delivered a stylish attacking victory over GM Andrey Esipenko, securing his first win of the tournament. The two players had been occupying the lowest standings before their encounter.

Nakamura Battles to Survive

GM Hikaru Nakamura drew against GM Matthias Bluebaum in a tense struggle where the American grandmaster again found himself without sufficient preparation by move 12. Nakamura was forced to rely on precise, defensive calculation to escape serious danger. As a pre-tournament favorite, Nakamura’s struggles have left his championship hopes increasingly remote.

Women’s Tournament Developments

In the parallel 2026 FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, GM Anna Muzychuk maintained her solo lead after drawing against GM Bibisara Assaubayeva. However, GM Vaishali Rameshbabu has closed the gap to within half a point by capitalizing on a critical error by GM Tan Zhongyi.

The first half concluded with multiple lengthy battles, including a 135-move marathon draw between GM Divya Deshmukh and GM Kateryna Lagno, while GM Aleksandra Goryachkina registered her seventh consecutive draw after being held by GM Zhu Jiner.

Tournament Resumes Tuesday

Round 8 will commence on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, following a rest day. Play begins at 8:45 a.m. ET, 14:45 CEST, and 6:15 p.m. IST.
