Two players have advanced from the Round of 16 stage of the 2026 Women’s Speed Chess Championship following decisive matches played on Wednesday. GM Kateryna Lagno secured a commanding victory over IM Karina Ambartsumova, while IM Alice Lee staged a thrilling comeback to edge former world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk in a nail-biting contest that came down to tiebreaks.

Lagno’s Dominant Performance

Lagno’s path to the quarterfinals was never in serious doubt. The three-time women’s blitz world champion dispatched Ambartsumova with a decisive 10.5-3.5 scoreline, claiming $2,625 in prize money compared to Ambartsumova’s $375.

The Russian grandmaster’s dominance was evident from the opening moments of the match. She compiled a perfect 5-0 record in the blitz segment, setting the tone early. Lagno’s success came partly through her use of the Alapin Sicilian with White, employing an offbeat setup with 7.g3 that she deployed repeatedly to great effect. In the final game of this segment, she demonstrated complete positional control, gradually gaining space with moves like a4-a5 and c4-c5 before suffocating her opponent’s pieces.

The 3+1 rapid segment highlighted Lagno’s resilience. Despite being outplayed in several positions, she managed to convert opportunities while Ambartsumova faltered under pressure. Lagno won three games and drew two in this section, extending her winning streak to seven consecutive victories. A particularly dramatic moment came when Ambartsumova, who held a winning position with a pawn advantage in a rook endgame, hung her rook with just four seconds on the clock. Lagno’s ability to capitalize on such errors proved decisive.

Ambartsumova’s best performance came in the final 1+1 bullet segment, where she scored her only match victory after Lagno’s knight sacrifice for a checkmating attack fell short. However, by that point, the match was already decided, and Lagno’s path to the quarterfinals was secured.

Lee’s Thrilling Comeback Against Kosteniuk

In stark contrast to Lagno’s dominant display, the match between Alice Lee and Alexandra Kosteniuk proved to be a tightly contested affair. Lee ultimately prevailed 9-7 but only after forcing the match to tiebreaks. She earned $2,343.75 in prize money, while Kosteniuk received $656.25.

Kosteniuk opened strongly in the 5+1 blitz segment, building a two-point lead with two wins and two draws. Lee struggled with time management in the early games, prematurely moving pieces that led to decisive blunders. In the second game, she achieved a winning advantage but allowed what commentators described as a “devilish cheapo”—a sneaky tactical blow played with just one second remaining on her clock.

The 3+1 rapid segment proved pivotal for Lee’s comeback strategy. She systematically cut into Kosteniuk’s lead, eventually pulling even in the match standings. Lee’s superior technique in these games, particularly in rook endgames, gave her momentum heading into the final segment. However, Kosteniuk managed to reclaim a one-point advantage going into the decisive bullet portion.

The 1+1 bullet segment became the turning point. Lee scored one additional point beyond Kosteniuk’s tally in this section, finally breaking through after a closely contested match. Her tiebreak victories secured advancement to the next round despite Kosteniuk’s determined resistance throughout the match.

Upcoming Quarterfinal Matchups

The quarterfinal stage continues on Friday, July 10, with two additional matches. GM Divya Deshmukh will face IM Rose Atwell at 10 a.m. ET (16:00 CEST / 7:30 p.m. IST), followed by GM Bibisara Assaubayeva’s encounter with Afruza Khamdamova at 12:30 p.m. ET (18:30 CEST / 10 p.m. IST).

Lagno will advance to face the winner of the pending match between IM Polina Shuvalova and FM Anastasia Avramidou in the quarterfinals.
